Gil Carrillo in Night Stalker

While Night Stalker may centre around the investigation into Richard Ramirez, we’re guided through the docuseries by the detectives who worked to solve the case, Frank Salerno and Gil Carrillo.

As explored in the Netflix series, Gil Carrillo, a native of Pico Rivera, didn’t have the easiest of upbringings as his teenage years in Los Angeles were spent in the company of gang members but before he could step down the wrong path, Gil’s parents enlisted him in the US Army at the age of 17.

Gil was deployed in Vietnam and following his discharge from the military in June 1970, he married wife Pearl, studied at college and became an LAPD police officer.

With just nine years experience, Gil Carrillo joined the ranks of the LAPD homicide department.

When Richard Ramirez began his murder spree in the mid-1980s, Gil Carrillo was one of the first detectives to suspect that the myriad of killings were being carried out by one man.

Alongside partner Frank Salerno, who worked on the Hillside Strangler case, Gil worked 18-hour days in order to bring the Night Stalker to justice.

In the summer of 1985, when Richard Ramirez was at his most prolific, Gil’s wife Pearl left the family home along with the family’s three children following a Night Stalker attack near to their home.

Where is Gil Carrillo now?

  • Gil Carrillo retired from policing in October 2009.

Gil Carrillo first became a patrol officer for the LAPD in 1971 and stayed in the police force until October 2009 when he retired after 38 years.

During that time, Gil Carrillo was promoted to Lieutenant of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

Gil Carrillo investigated between 700-800 murders and coincidentally, Carrillo’s badge number, 187, is the police radio code for murder in the US.

Since retiring from the police force, Gil Carrillo has held lectures on his work and has spent much of his retirement travelling the world with his wife, Pearl, who returned to home once the Night Stalker case had been solved.

According to the Daily Breeze, speaking on his retirement, Gil Carrillo said: “After 38 years I have some words of wisdom to impart on young deputies and their families.”

“This job is not easy and it’s not easy on family life. But you need the family and the family needs you.”

But the esteemed detective continued: “If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on January 13th, 2021.
