Donald Trump’s nine second cameo in Home Alone 2 may have taken place back in 1992, but the short appearance from former President has become a topic of conversation once more on Twitter.
Macauley Culkin, the now 40 year-old actor who played Kevin McAllister in the Home Alone films, spoke out about Trump’s appearance in the film on his Twitter account.
On January 13th, Macauley Culkin responded to a tweet which said: “petition to digitally replace trump in ‘home alone 2’ with 40-year-old macaulay culkin.”
The actor kept his response to the tweet short and sweet, simply writing: “sold.”
Macauley did not quit there, and later replied with a “bravo” to a video someone posted on Twitter showing the Donald Trump Home Alone scene, with Trump edited out.

Where does Donald Trump appear in Home Alone?
At the 27 minute point, to be exact, a mini Macaulay Culkin stops and asks someone where the lobby is at the Plaza Hotel, in a desperate time of need.
Donald Trump leans over and says: “Down the hall and to the left,” with some of his famous hand motions, before adding in a double take at the boy, managing to get his full face in the shot…for stylistic reasons we guess?
Starring in Home Alone probably hasn’t been the President’s greatest achievement in life, but he does seem somewhat proud of the nine second cameo.
“Well, I’m in Home Alone 2 and a lot of people mention it every year, especially around Christmas. They say ‘I just saw you’. Especially young kids, they say, ‘I just saw you on the movie’,” he once told members of the US military.

So, why exactly was Donald Trump in Home Alone 2?
While it might be humorous to imagine a stressed out Hollywood director pacing the room as he moans that something’s missing from the final cut, only to realise that Donald Trump was the missing piece all along. It didn’t happen quite like that. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
Speaking to Insider, Director Chris Columbus said they was given an ultimatum: use Donald Trump in the movie or they wouldn’t be allowed to film at The Plaza, which was owned by Trump at the time. “So we agreed to put him in the movie, and when we screened it for the first time the oddest thing happened: People cheered when Trump showed up on-screen. So I said to my editor, ‘leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience’. But he did bully his way into the movie.”
As for the full frontal shot, turns out it wasn’t stylistic reasons, but Trump’s own doing. “We filmed in their lobby and he was around, and he had to be in the movie, he had to photobomb the shoot one day, and came walking in with his entourage and wanted to walk through the shot,” said cinematographer Julio Macat.
“Of course we said yes because we’re filming in his hotel. As he does the shot, he turns and looks to the camera, so you could really see his face.”
A Trump trade deal of a different kind
Trump’s a proud man of his ability to create trades, but this one might have been his most effective…kind of. His one with the Home Alone 2 crew clearly proved successful, garnering him a whole nine seconds of extra stardom, but did you know he should have been in 1992’s Scent of a Woman too?
Matt Damon told The Hollywood Reporter: “The deal was that if you wanted to shoot in one of his buildings you had to write him in a part. Martin Brest had to write something in Scent of a Woman, and the whole crew was in on it. You have to waste an hour of your day with a bulls*** shot: Donald Trump walks in and Al Pacino’s like, ‘Hello Mr. Trump’ and then he exits.”
“You waste a little time so that you can get the permit, and then you can cut the scene out. But I guess in Home Alone 2 they left it in.” That’s gotta burn.
Canada cut out Trump’s part in Home Alone 2
Since 2014, CBS Canada’s version of Home Alone 2 is Donald Trump-less, but it wasn’t a political stance or statement of any kind. Instead, it’s just edited down for time, and as the scene isn’t a key part of plot it was one of the scenes taken away. Or a bull**** shot, as Matt Damon put it.
People took notice of the missing scene in 2019 though, and Donald Trump Jr even reposted an article calling the choice “pathetic”. His dad on the other hand had a lighter way of looking at it.
“I guess Justin [Trudeau] doesn’t much like my making him pay up on NATO or trade!” he tweeted, followed by: “The movie will never be the same! (just kidding)”
It lead to his… erm… big-time Hollywood movie career?
So it might not have directly lead to more roles, we’re sure no big Hollywood producer saw him and booked him up right there and then. His skills didn’t exactly rival that of DiCaprio, or De Niro, or any other De for that matter, but it was the start of a trail of imdb credits.
Two years later he appeared on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, alongside Mrs Trump, who was Marla Maples at the time and not Melania. In 1996 he was in The Nanny, and he even starred alongside Carrie Bradshaw in a 1996 episode of Sex and The City, to name a few. All as himself, and all generally in a black suit and red tie.
