Remembering Alan Rickman after his death

Today marks the five-year anniversary of his departure, but what better way to celebrate his extraordinary achievements than watching them.

So, here are 7 of the best Alan Rickman movies to stream online tonight…

A Little Chaos (2014)

In this British period-drama, Alan Rickman plays Le Roi Louis XIV alongside the likes of Kate Winslet and Stanley Tucci.

It’s a particularly special film, because not only does it highlight Alan’s acting talents, but his directorial and writing abilities too.

That’s right! The film marked his return to the director’s chair after many years; he previously helmed and wrote 1997’s The Winter Guest starring Emma Thompson.

Bottle Shock (2008)

Randall Miller’s comedy-drama can be considered somewhat of an overlooked and underrated film in Alan’s oeuvre.

He plays Steven Spurrier, a wine steward and shop owner who heads to California in search of a good, cheap wine to bring home for a taste test.

His business hinges on a successful trip, and he stumbles upon a winery producing quality product. Convinced he’s struck gold, the process of bringing it back begins.

The cast also boasts Chris Pine and Bill Pullman – not one to miss!

Close My Eyes (1991)

Yet another often overlooked entry, we have Close my Eyes.

Directed by Stephen Poliakoff (Glorious 39), the film stars Clive Owen and Saskia Reeves in a tale of a brother and sister who embark upon a taboo relationship.

Alan shines in the central role of stock analyst Sinclair Bryant.

Die Hard (1988)

What is there to say about Die Hard that hasn’t been said a million times already?

The role of Hans Gruber arguably remains Alan’s most iconic and the film is a bona-fide classic, regarded by many as the greatest action movie ever made.

You may have recently watched it over the festive period, but there’s never a bad time to treat yourself to this one. Yippee ki-yay!

Galaxy Quest (1999)

Even if you’re not a fan of sci-fi, all you need is a sense of humour to enjoy Dean Parisot’s cult comedy film.

In a cast which features Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell and many more, it’s arguably still Alan who serves as the highlight, delivering an exceptional turn as Alexander Dane.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)

While Hans Gruber is surely Alan’s most iconic character, he certainly has some strong competition from Severus Snape.

The Harry Potter franchise prides itself on brilliant casting, with so many belove English talents leaving their mark on the series.

However, many fans of the books will tell you that Alan’s casting as the brooding Snape was a stroke of genius. Reflecting back on his work across the eight instalments, it’s difficult to imagine anybody else having tackled the role.

He played the role from 2001 to 2011, but on January 14th, it’s particularly emotional to experience his first appearance.

His work here is quite simply movie magic, proving that nobody cast a spell quite like Alan Rickman.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Tim Burton’s gory musical starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter is an acquired taste, but if you love it, then it’s likely that you really, really love it.

Repeat viewings have become essential over the years and it’s such a thrill to revisit these excellent songs and performances, with Alan commanding the screen in the part of Judge Turpin.
