Speaking on the Handbrake Off podcast, Arsenal journalist James McNicholas has given a worrying update on Arsenal’s hunt for a midfielder this month.
The journalist said that although Arsenal would love to bring in a number 10 this month, he’s not anticipating a big name arrival, and there’s even the possibility of nobody coming in if they can’t find the right player.
Usually, you would say that taking this considered approach to the transfer window is a good thing, but with Arsenal clearly quite desperate to sign a new attacking midfielder, this is worrying.
“The list is not long, and there’s a sense within the club that although they would love to add a player in that position, if the right guy isn’t out there, and the circumstances are very trying, they just won’t do it,” McNicholas said.
“Having committed money to players who haven’t worked out on say Willian or to an extent Pepe, I think there’s a real cautiousness about doing that again. I think it will be interesting to see if they bring in a short-term solution, can they bring somebody in on loan?
“We’re only a week on or so from Arsenal taking out a £100m loan from the treasury, so we have to bear in mind the financial situation of the club too. I’m not anticipating a big, snazzy number 10 signing from Arsenal this January.”
We’ve heard for the longest time that Arsenal want a creative midfielder, and now we’re hearing that it may not even happen.
We can only hope that the Gunners’ list of targets has a name on it that is seen as affordable and of a high enough quality.
Arsenal may still get their attacking midfielder this month, but it’s far from guaranteed.
