Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag was thrilled to be reunited with his former Utrecht talisman Sebastien Haller this month – especially after the striker made a “huge impact” off the bench in the weekend’s 2-2 draw with title rivals PSV Eindhoven.
But not everyone at Ajax was glad to see the West Ham United misfit make a £20 million return to Dutch football.
After producing five assists and 11 goals on loan at FC Twente this season, Brazilian hot-shot Danilo had hoped to catch the eye at the Johan Cruyff Arena ahead of a potential return to his parent club in the summer.

But while sporting director Marc Overmars has spoken in glowing terms about the Eredivisie’s second-most prolific marksman, Danilo’s future has suddenly been cast into doubt by the arrival of Ajax’s club-record signing.
“(My future) has become a bit more complicated. I am not happy about that (Haller’s arrival) either, because it has made me lose hope a bit,” Danilo, the star attraction at the heart of a thrilling Twente strikeforce, tells ESPN.
“I was told that if I did well here, I could be the first striker (at Ajax).”
And this could have repercussions a few miles down the road from West Ham’s London Stadium.
In the summer, CalcioNews24 reported Tottenham Hotspur were eyeing a potential £5 million deal for Danilo, at the time a little-known striker who had played just 73 minutes of Eredivisie football.
A few months down the line, one of Europe’s most in-form frontmen may be more tempted than ever to follow in the footsteps of Christian Eriksen and Davinson Sanchez.
If Danilo sees no future at Ajax, there will be no shortage of clubs looking to offer him a first team role elsewhere.
