Leon Osman told Match of the Day on BBC One that he is perhaps saying for the first time that Everton are capable of winning the Premier League title.
The former Toffees midfielder hailed Carlo Ancelotti for the job he has done at Goodison Park, with Everton now sitting fifth in the table after beating Wolves on Tuesday.
Only four points separate Everton and first-placed Manchester United, but with the leaders due to play Liverpool on Sunday, Ancelotti’s men will close the gap on at least one of the top two if they win their next match.
Nonetheless, during Osman’s punditry stint for MOTD, this is what was said about Everton’s recent win.
An image pans to the top half of the Premier League table to which Osman reacted “Delighted to see the table. I have made up that you have put that there.”
Host Dan Walker then said: “You demanded we put this in.” Osman added: “Well, we were fourth when I asked for it.”
Former Manchester right-back Micah Richards then said: “You have been saying that Everton are going to win the league all afternoon.”
Osman responded to those claims: “Well, I haven’t been able to say that for a good few years. Maybe ever, so we are in a great position, aren’t we?
“I do think if Everton are going to have a serious challenge then they will need a bigger squad and reinforcements. But it’s been a fantastic start to the season by Carlo Ancelotti and better than the Evertonians would have dreamt of.”
There’s no doubt that Everton are in a title race and given that they aren’t being talked about much, it does help their cause and that underdog status makes them dangerous.
Whilst Ancelotti’s players showed real quality by winning without regular goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin, they do need him back as quick as possible.
But the January transfer window will also be key for Everton because those extra few legs could prove to make a crucial difference.
