Former Scotland international Craig Burley has told ESPN that Jose Mourinho didn’t want to sign Gareth Bale after he was an unused substitute during Tottenham’s draw against Fulham on Wednesday night.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Fulham equalised and Mourinho opted to bring on Erik Lamela and Carlos Vinicius, with Bale and Dele Alli left warming the Spurs bench.
It has to be questioned why at least one of those players didn’t come onto the pitch, as Spurs dropped more points.
Former Chelsea midfielder Burley suggested that Bale was a ‘Daniel Levy signing’ and not someone Mourinho wanted at the club this summer.
“Gareth Bale, on the bench, I mean I could only imagine that Jose Mourinho didn’t want Gareth Bale at the club,” said Burley. “It must have been a Daniel Levy signing. Daniel Levy must have gone ‘here, I have got you, Gareth Bale’.
“Why else would he not play him? Or even utilise him in games that he needs to win? Why bother? It’s saying to me that somebody said to Mourinho ‘I will bring you Gareth Bale’ and he has said ‘Well, bring him in. I am not going to play him’.
“He is sat on the bench again, isn’t he? Are you trying to tell me Gareth Bale cannot change a game if he is fit? So, why is he not playing? It’s a head-scratcher.”
Both Bale, and especially Alli, didn’t put a foot wrong in the FA Cup last time out even though it was against a non-league side.
They did their bit during that match and are then rewarded with not even a five-minute appearance against a newly-promoted side.
Bale needs that sharpness in his game, and in truth, he isn’t going to get it by just warming the bench.
