Aberdeen attacker Scott Wright should jump at the chance to join Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, former Ibrox favourite Kris Boyd told Sky Sports.
While the likes of Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Connor Goldson didn’t come cheap, the backbone of Gerrard’s squad is made up of inspired, bargain signings.
The masterful midfield quartet of Steve Davis, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo set Rangers back a combined £50,000 after all.
Summer additions Bongani Zungu and Leon Balogun also arrived on free transfers, with sporting director Ross Wilson showcasing his eye for a deal.
Whether Wright joins in January or July, the versatile 23-year-old already looks set to become the latest in a string of intelligent, low-cost additions on the blue half of Glasgow (Sky).
According to Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, Wright has turned down the chance to extend a contract which expires in six months after Rangers expressed their interest (Evening Express).
And Boyd, who won two Scottish Premiership titles in the royal blue shirt, believes Wright should jump at the chance to join the champions-in-waiting.
“If you look at the way Rangers play, I think he fits into that. He’s not an out-and-out wide player, hugging the touchline, he comes in and looks to place, becoming that false striker in behind the main striker,” Boyd explained.
“That’s the way it suits Wright – he’s definitely someone who has shown he probably has got a step in him. It’s a big step, of course, playing under pressure every single week.
“There is a talented footballer in there, so I just hope he goes to Rangers and kicks on.
“Once again, it’s a young Scottish player being given the opportunity to make that step up to a big club. I hope he realises that opportunity and grasps it with both hands.”
Wright is expected to challenge Scott Arfield and Ianis Hagi for the number ten role in Gerrard’s squad but could also fill in out wide if required.
With Rangers fighting on multiple fronts this season, the former Scotland U21 ace should not be short of opportunities to prove himself at Ibrox either.
